Red stele (Phytophthora fragariae). This fungus thrives in cold and damp winter weather. Strawberries grow poorly, leaves turn dull blue and the core of the root turns red. The fungus lives in the soil where it can survive for years at rest. Phytophthora fragariae var. rubi is the variety of the fungus that attacks raspberries.
