Frit fly (Oscinella frit). The 3 to 4 mm long, legless and transparent larva of this fly feeds on the shoots of grasses, such as maize, wheat, oats and barley.

Control

In case of severe infestation, spray with pyrethrum.

Prevention

Protect the maize (vegetable garden) with insect netting.
