Carrot fly (Chamaepsila rosae). This ± 5 mm long fly lays its eggs in late afternoon, early evening near the roots of the crop. The larvae feed on the finer lateral roots of the root; later they damage the main root by drilling tunnels into it. The pupae of the Carrot fly hibernate ± 10 cm deep in the soil.

Control

Damage to plants is unfortunately irreversible, remove affected plants.

Prevention

Windless spots, sandy soil, warm and moist weather, fresh farmyard manure attract Carrot flies. Prevent the Carrot fly by using insect-proof mesh, sowing early and maintaining a wide planting distance. Clean up plant debris with maggots.
Plant strengthener with fragrance increases plant resistance.
