Black rot (carrot) (Alternaria radicina). This fungal disease affects carrots. Seed may be contaminated with spores. In the soil, spores can survive up to eight years. Affected seedlings fall over; leaves yellow and turn brown. Black rot starts in the carrot crown at the point of leaf attachment followed by black, indented spots on the carrots.
The fungus can hibernate on plant debris.
Black rot is more common in areas with light soils than in areas with clay.
