Cabbage collar

Cabbage collar – collar of plastic or cardboard around the base of a cabbage, preventing the cabbage root fly from laying eggs there and suppressing weeds and retaining moisture. A cabbage collar is easy to make yourself, but can also be purchased ready-made.
The cabbage root fly lays its eggs one cm from the stem of the cabbage plant. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae eat their way into the stem and the cabbage plant then dies. The cabbage collar prevents the cabbage root fly from laying its eggs near the cabbage plant. In addition, the cabbage collar keeps the immediate vicinity of the cabbage plant weed-free and prevents the soil under the cabbage plant from drying out.
