Predator bug, (Orius laevigatus) – this predatory bug is a small, flattened insect measuring + 2.5 mm. Adult predatory bugs target all stages of thrips. The nymphs focus more on the thrips larvae. The Orius predator bug is the only natural pest that can control adult thrips.
Another predator bug is Macrolophus caliginosus; this slender pale-green insect is + 3 millimetres in length and feeds on whitefly, aphids, mites and the eggs of moths. This bug is used in Europe in the biological control of whitefly in tomato crops in greenhouses.
Both predator bugs are commercially available.
