Lime tree aphid (Eucallipterus tiliae). These 2 to 3 mm large green/yellow aphids have black spots on the top. The lime tree aphids sit on the underside of the leaf from which they suck the plant sap. The aphids care about the sugars in the plant sap; the excess sap is excreted in the form of honeydew. A black fungus (sooty mold) often develops on the honeydew.
Lime tree aphids are found worldwide wherever species of Tilia occur. The aphids hibernate as eggs on the branches and buds of lime trees.

Control

Trees are hardly harmed by the lime tree aphid; control is not necessary.
During summer dry and hot weather, the number of lime tree aphids can explode. Because the area under the tree becomes black with sooty mold, it can be perceived as a nuisance. Spraying the aphids away with a hard jet of water helps reduce the number of aphids.
