Black radish(Raphanus sativus subsp. niger) is related to the radish and belongs to the crucifers just like cabbages. In crop rotation, black radish belongs in the plot with cabbages. Black radish does not make high demands on the soil, as long as it has a loose structure to a little less than half a meter. Black radish has a taproot and it is supposed to grow straight down. Black radish whose root is black, is a winter radish. It’s sown locally in open ground starting in mid-May. Sowing can be done until early August. Harvest is two months later. Winter radish is sown in June and July, often as a secondary crop. Protect against cabbage root fly by insect netting is necessary. Water in drought conditions.

Bugs

Tunnels form in the roots: maggots of the cabbage root fly (Delia radicum).

Fungi & diseases

Poor growth, swollen roots rot away: Clubroot (Plasmodiophora brassicae).

Yellow spots on the leaves: downy mildew (Peronosporaceae family).

On the root, dark spots with
star-shaped cracks: Common scab (Streptomyces scabies).
