Anthracnose (Apiognomonia veneta) is caused by a fungus that causes young leaves to wither in plane trees. This fungus is also responsible for cankers on young branches, after which they die.
Anthracnose is widespread in Europe, the US and New Zealand.
The western plane tree (Platanus occidentalis) – also known as American sycamore – is highly susceptible to this fungus.
