The plant is native to eastern North America. The species grows mainly in the Appalachian Mountains from Virginia in the north to Alabama in the south. In addition, the plant is found multiplying in the wild in a number of states. The species designation catawbiense comes from the Native American tribe Catawba. It is a dense shrub that usually grows up to 3 m tall, but under favorable conditions it can also grow up to 5 m tall. The plant is an evergreen. The leaves are 6-12 x 2-4 cm in size. The flowers are not particularly large. They are 3-4.5 cm in diameter and are purple in color, often with small dots or stripes. The fruit is a 1.5-2 cm capsule, which contains a large number of small seeds.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row equal_height=”yes”][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_custom_heading text=”Bugs” font_container=”tag:h4|text_align:center|color:%23ffffff” google_fonts=”font_family:Lato%3A100%2C100italic%2C300%2C300italic%2Cregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic%2C900%2C900italic|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal” css=”.vc_custom_1532164328547{background-color: #585858 !important;}”][vc_column_text el_class=”entrytxt”]

Leaf damage by the Vine weevil, photo: Cor van Gelderen

Semicircular bites from the leaf margins, round holes in the leaf: <a href="https://www.plantenplagen.nl/en/plantenplagen/vine-weevil/" target="_blank" title='[vc_row][vc_column width="2/3"][vc_column_text el_id="topentry" el_class="topentry"]Vine weevil, this nearly 1 cm large dark gray weevil can be found on a wide range of ornamental plants.
