The usually gray olean<\/wbr>der scale lives on the somewhat older branches of woody plants. The shells of the olean<\/wbr>der scale consist of hardened secretions and can be removed; unlike those of the soft-shelled aphid<\/a> whose shell consists of the hardened back.
\nThese scale insects sit in groups on and next to each other on the underside of leaves and on woody parts.
\nWhile sucking plant sap, the olean<\/wbr>der scale secretes toxins that cause yellow, red or brown spots on the leaves. Later followed by leaf dieback and deformities.
