This fly belongs to the leaf miners <em>(Agromyzidae)<\/em>; group of insects whose larvae eat away mesophyll. The hol<wbr><\/wbr>ly leaf miner is found throughout Europe. Hol<wbr><\/wbr>ly is its host <a title=\"Glossary\" href=\"https:\/\/www.plantenplagen.nl\/en\/files\/glossary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(host plant)<\/a>.<br>\nIn late summer and fall, the hol<wbr><\/wbr>ly leaf miner build tunnels, in which the flies hibernate. In spring, the larvae eat away the mesophyll so that the mines get bigger and bigger. They then pupate to leave mines in late spring. Adult hol<wbr><\/wbr>ly leaf miners also live off hol<wbr><\/wbr>ly leaves, sucking plant sap from punctured cells. In late May, hol<wbr><\/wbr>ly leaf miners lay eggs in the main vein of young leaves.<br>\nHol<wbr><\/wbr>ly leaf miner damage is minor.
