The sawfly lays its eggs in the lower part of the shrub. The false caterpillars eat holes in the leaf, they start at the bottom of the bush and in a short time the many caterpillars cover the entire shrub. They eat the mesophyll; they leave the leaf veins intact.

The Common gooseberry sawfly has two generations per year; three during hot summers. The larvae overwinter in a cocoon underground. In the spring, the larvae pupate and the sawflies emerge. The female sawfly lays a whole string of eggs (50 to 100) on the underside of the leaf. After about a week and a half, the caterpillars hatch and feast on the leaves.

Gooseberries are the most susceptible to the Common gooseberry sawfly, followed by red and white currants. On black currants, the sawflies are hardly spotted.

Similar to the Common gooseberry sawfly are the Pale-spotted gooseberry sawfly (Nematus leucotrochus) and the Small gooseberry sawfly (Pristiphora appendiculata); however, these sawflies have a pronounced preference for gooseberries. Unlike the Common gooseberry sawfly, the Pale-spotted gooseberry sawfly has a single brood. Adults of the latter appear in early May and larvae in May and June. The Small gooseberry sawfly can produce up to four generations of larvae per season – the first generation appears at the end of April.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row equal_height=”yes”][vc_column width=”1/3″ css=”.vc_custom_1532102781238{background-color: #ffffff !important;}”][vc_custom_heading text=”Where to find” font_container=”tag:h4|text_align:center|color:%23ffffff” google_fonts=”font_family:Lato%3A100%2C100italic%2C300%2C300italic%2Cregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic%2C900%2C900italic|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal” css=”.vc_custom_1532165393091{background-color: #536895 !important;}”][vc_column_text el_id=”entrytxt” el_class=”entrytxt” css=”.vc_custom_1680967483599{padding-left: 12px !important;}”]

<a href="https://www.plantenplagen.nl/en/plantenplagen/gooseberry/" target="_blank" title='[vc_row][vc_column width="2/3"][vc_column_text el_id="topentry" el_class="topentry"]Gooseberry, like the redcurrant and the blackcurrant, belongs to the ribes family.
